Eureka [Troubleshooting Analysis]

1. Application services are not available before startup

Assuming that the eureka server service hangs up or does not start before the client application service starts, then the application service can still start normally, but there will be an error message:

Due to the lack of connection to the eureka server, the service registration information of the service registry can not be accessed naturally and can not interact with other services. In this case, eureka server designs an eureka.client.backup-registry-impl attribute, which can be configured to read service registration information from the back registry when the eureka server cannot access it at startup. As fallback, this backup-registry-impl is more suitable for the scenario where the server provides load balancing or the service IP address is relatively fixed.

2. Application service runtime unavailability

If the client application service is running, the eureka server service suddenly hangs up.

eureka client has a localRegionApps variable of AtomicReference < Applications > type in local memory to maintain the registration information pulled back from eureka server. The client side has a timing task, CacheRefreshThread, which regularly pulls registration information from the server side to the local area. If the eureka server application hangs up at runtime, the local CacheRefreshThread throws an exception and the local RegionApps variable will not be updated. The abnormal information is as follows:

You can see that the thread request eureka server named [freshExecutor-0] throws an exception.

3. The eureka server part is not available

3.1. client end

The client side has a timed task, AsyncResolver updateTask, which specializes in pulling service Url changes. If the configuration file changes, the runtime can be changed dynamically. After pulling out, the client randomizes the list of services. Some of the source codes are as follows:

package com.netflix.discovery.shared.resolver;public class AsyncResolver<T extends EurekaEndpoint> implements ClosableResolver<T> {
    private static final Logger logger = LoggerFactory.getLogger(AsyncResolver.class);
    //Some of them are omitted.private final Runnable updateTask;

    AsyncResolver(String name, ClusterResolver<T> delegate, List<T> initialValue, int executorThreadPoolSize, int refreshIntervalMs, int warmUpTimeoutMs) {
        this.warmedUp = new AtomicBoolean(false);
        this.scheduled = new AtomicBoolean(false);
        this.lastLoadTimestamp = -1L;
        this.updateTask = new Runnable() {
            public void run() {
                try {
                    List<T> newList = AsyncResolver.this.delegate.getClusterEndpoints();
                    if (newList != null) {
                        AsyncResolver.this.resultsRef.getAndSet(newList);
                        AsyncResolver.this.lastLoadTimestamp = System.currentTimeMillis();
                    } else {
                        AsyncResolver.logger.warn("Delegate returned null list of cluster endpoints");
                    }

                    AsyncResolver.logger.debug("Resolved to {}", newList);
                } catch (Exception var2) {
                    AsyncResolver.logger.warn("Failed to retrieve cluster endpoints from the delegate", var2);
                }

            }
        };
        this.name = name;
        this.delegate = delegate;
        this.refreshIntervalMs = refreshIntervalMs;
        this.warmUpTimeoutMs = warmUpTimeoutMs;
        this.executorService = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(1, (new ThreadFactoryBuilder()).setNameFormat("AsyncResolver-" + name + "-%d").setDaemon(true).build());
        this.threadPoolExecutor = new ThreadPoolExecutor(1, executorThreadPoolSize, 0L, TimeUnit.SECONDS, new SynchronousQueue(), (new ThreadFactoryBuilder()).setNameFormat("AsyncResolver-" + name + "-executor-%d").setDaemon(true).build());
        this.backgroundTask = new TimedSupervisorTask(this.getClass().getSimpleName(), this.executorService, this.threadPoolExecutor, refreshIntervalMs, TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS, 5, this.updateTask);
        this.resultsRef = new AtomicReference(initialValue);
        Monitors.registerObject(name, this);
    }
  //Some of them are omitted.
}

For example:

eureka:
  client:
    serviceUrl:
      defaultZone: http://localhost:8761/eureka/,http://localhost:8762/eureka/,http://localhost:8763/eureka/

The first pull may be in the order of configuration, such as host1, host2, host3, and then the timed task update will be randomized once to become host2, host3, host1. When client requests server, it maintains an unavailable list of Eureka servers, such as connection error or 5xx exception, which will be included in the list. When the size of the list exceeds the specified threshold, the list will be emptied. For the list of servers available, usually pull back the list after the server is not available. If the list is empty after deletion, it will not be deleted. Retryable Eureka HttpClient is used for requests. If one of the Eureka servers is hung up, it will be included in the list of unavailability.

3.2. server side

Ereka servers become peer node s to each other. If one of the Eureka servers hangs up, the replication between the Eureka servers will be affected. If the server Url information of the eureka server is changed manually, peerNode can be removed actively. If the peerNode is not removed, the error will be reported.
